Kodandera Madappa Cariappa


Field Marshal Kodandera Kipper Madappa Cariappa OBE was the First Indian CommanderinChief of the Indian Army and led the Indian forces on the Western Front during the IndoPakistan War of 1947.

Cariappa was born at Shanivarsante in Kodagu in the erstwhile State of Coorg, which was at that time a selfgoverning princely state of India, which is currently in Karnataka.
